ACTION - 1005 Station Street
Here is something we need lots of people attending, and making their voice heard in support of non-market housing being proposed for the empty lot just down the block from where we did our squat. It's an open house, and there will be opportunity to see the plans, and write down comments of support - all of which get counted. If you are able to make it out (Thursday, March 13th 4:30 - 8:30 pm in the Board Room of Science World), please do so.
Begin forwarded message:
1005 Station Street is the hole in the ground filled with water that is owned by the city and designated for social housing - its just next to 980 Main, the site that Streams of Justice squatted. The Portland Hotel can build there but the NIMBY neighbours are agitating against it. We will bring a copy of the newsletter sent out by NIMBY's to the meeting to show around at the meeting.
We're afraid that we'll have to struggle to keep or get every social service that we need as the numbers of condo owners increase. Right now new condos are increasing by a factor of 3:1 compared to social housing.
Many thanks and hope to see you there.

City of Vancouver along with Portland Hotel Society has decided to place an eighty unit of 310 sq.ft SRO development on 1005 Station St next to two major bars in the area. This plan was approved back in 2001. As a taxpayer and a member of this society I do not think by placing another SRO near by the drug distribution center of Vancouver we can solve anything. These kinds of developments will act as a magnet to attract drug dealing, break-ins, arm robberies and other unaccepted activities. In my opinion, if the community really wants to help the heavily drug user and alcoholic members, it should keep them away from high drug trafficking areas and bars rather than placing a SRO development steps away from Main and Hastings. Strathcona is a fast improving neighbourhood that contains many middle class families with young teenagers.
I was a drug abuser in past and I am clean now with the help of my supportive family. I totally agree with the above comment. I am clean for more than four years, but if they place me right back in the drug town. God knows that I go back to where I was. Portland Hotel Society only makes it easy for addicts to use and their programs is nonsense to place these SROs in east side. I live in Richmond now away from the action.
I have lived and worked in the DTES for 15 years, and have the displeasure of walking past the PHS Hastings and Cordova locations daily.
The freak show antics - open drug use, public displays of defecation, swearing, attempted break ins, and animal abuse are of the behaviors I have witnessed of the PHS residents and the people they attract.
These typical behaviors can clearly be seen directly in front of and behind their facilities.
By locating a PHS program in any neighbourhood is to redefine and subject that neighbourhood and its pedestrian corridors to unsafe, unacceptable behaviour.
If it is simply housing you are after, then perhaps the APC can move its employable staff out of co-op housing and make room for those who truly need it.
If its housing for the DTES un-housable you need, put it in the vicinity of the present locations that are already degraded by the current PHS residents - instead of dragging them up Main street and dumping them in the City's least respected tax payer's and working class's community.
No one will ever get clean living in the drug infested cesspool of the DTES - I've seen more get addicted and die than I have seen get clean - I have tried to help addicts and have been spat on and robbed. I have lost friends.
This facility's program and residents WILL do more harm to the COMMUNITY than good.
I will not come back to this blog.
Wow!
I am so discouraged! I say poor and dejected people of the world stand up and start a revolution!! First I listened to the radio this morning as someone - who was supposedly not "nimby" around the issue - go on about how there were too many of "those" people in his neighbourhood. Amazing!! We need to stand up and say "you know what there are too many condos in our community! too many upper middle class people looking for upward mobility!" When we did the squat during "HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK" - Yes homelessness is a huge issue in this world class city - I didn't see a huge problem in that area. It is a mixed neighbourhood. Why can't we think of how we can positively live together. The people the Portland serves have been disgarded all their lives. We are human beings for goodness sake! All of us have dignity no matter what condition we are in. Ask yourself why people are addicted. Ask yourself why people with mental illness are left to fend for themeselves in a city that is supposedly the best place in the world to live. This society is sick!! and in desperate need of compassion and care. Those of us who are able to make our way in the sickness and not be destroyed need to rally around those who have found themselves, for a myriad of reasons, on the bottom of the barrel and often on the street, offering them a place in our communities. No one wants "these people" in their communities. It is time to step up to the plate and do the right thing by our fellow human beings. Drugs are all over Vancouver!! These people do not have nice condos to do their drugs in. Whose fault is that?
Well, answer the question! Who's fault is that? Why the blame card? Are we not supposed to take responsability for our actions? The answer does not lie in building low income housing situated all in one place creating a ghetto. The answer is a case by case basis of placing people who want help in subsidised condos around the city in buildings that house people of various economic levels.
One point that really bothers me is why the disrespect and self centredness amongst the addicts. My brother has been beaten, robbed etc... Tell me why I should help someone who refuses help? I have been there myself and saw first hand.
So to all who need help here is a tidbit. Learn to give and you shall receive. Or you can continue to abuse, swear, beat and blame. The choice is always ours.
