Evictions forcing out Downtown Eastside poor

VANCOUVER -- Hundreds of tenants in the Downtown Eastside are being evicted from their rooms and the next regional homeless count will likely show a large increase, Pivot Legal Society lawyer David Eby said today.
Eby said the poorest tenants in the area - some of them in hotels purchased by the provincial government to convert to social housing - are losing their rooms as owners move to sell or renovate their properties.
"In the past three months we've had evictions from about five buildings in the area," he said.
