Reading the Text / Reading the World 2007

For the past two years during the Fall, I have organized a series of classes that brings together readings of the biblical text and current, local social justice concerns. Last year the series focused on the topic of poverty amidst affluence, and we looked at some of the structural causes of poverty faced by people in our region. Out of that series a group was formed called Streams of Justice, which has sought to continue the struggle for social justice through education and public action initiatives.

As part of our ongoing learning together, we are hosting another series of teaching sessions this fall. The classes will not be held on a weekly basis, as in the past, but will follow a monthly pattern, occurring on the last Monday evening of each month. As previously, these sessions will be comprised of reflections from the biblical text and presentations from invited speakers on various social justice
issues. There will also be time for discussion and conversation together. We hope to sustain this pattern of monthly sessions through the coming fall, winter and spring, and we’ll keep you informed as they unfold.

The three fall sessions are as follows:

  • Monday, Sept 24th – “Countering the Society of the Spectacle”
  • Monday, Oct 29th – “Hidden from View: Poverty and the Growing Income Gap”
  • Monday, Nov 26th – “The Aboriginal Experience: Residential Schools Past and Present”

Each session will be held at …

Grandview Calvary Baptist Church,
1803 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver

7:00 – 9:30 pm

Admission is free of charge, but if you would like to donate to the work of Streams of Justice we would be most grateful. Thanks for your interest, and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to call email (ddiewertt AT shaw DOT ca).

This is popular theological education that is on the move, from the mind to the feet, from the pews to the street. So be sure to spread the word about these sessions … all are welcome.

Wilsonian - even as we speak Dave and I are talking about audio and/or video recording, so it looks likely.
