Greater Vancouver Regional District is bringing Philip Mangano, the Executive Director of the US Interagency Council on Homelessness, to Greater Vancouver in May. Two events have been organized in co-operation with regional partners.
- On Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at 7:00 pm Philip Mangano will be speaking at a public forum at Simon Fraser University Harbour Front campus.
- On Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 am Philip Mangano will be speaking at a Vancouver Board of Trade breakfast session.
Mr. Mangano will speak about the business case for solving homelessness and about the potential of innovative approaches that are being promoted by the US Interagency Council on Homelessness. This will be a unique opportunity to hear first hand how the US successes have been achieved and what lessons can be applied to the Greater Vancouver Region.
Under Mr. Mangano’s leadership homeless rates across the US have been significantly reduced. These decreases have been achieved through solid strategies focused on moving people who are chronically homeless into permanent housing and providing the supports they need to remain housed. These strategies have been developed through a co-ordinated effort lead by the US Interagency Council on Homelessness that brings together all relevant government agencies and ensures that adequate funds are targeted towards eliminating chronic homelessness.
Philip F. Mangano was appointed by President Bush to lead the Council in March 2002. The Interagency Council is responsible for creating and co-ordinating a federal response to homelessness and for achieving the realization of the President's commitment to end chronic homelessness in the United States in 10 years.
